Chinese Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival, falls on Feb 1 this year. People across China hold various activities to celebrate the Spring Festival, like ancestor worship, welcoming guests, receiving greetings, and praying for a great harvest, which embody the essence of Chinese culture. There are also the customs of hanging up red couplets, staying up all night on new year’s eve, and reuniting with one’s family for dinner are common everywhere. Lion dances, dragon dances, temple fairs, and appreciating flower lanterns are also very popular in some regions.
Due to their rich forms and strong national characteristics, these activities are welcomed and loved by people from many other countries and regions. It’s reported that nearly 20 countries and regions have designated Spring Festival as a legal holiday for the whole or part of the area under their jurisdiction.
