Suzhou in East China's Jiangsu province has in recent years been making concerted efforts to lure top talents by promising them high-quality accommodation.
These accommodation options are located in talent communities that feature convenient transportation and well-appointed facilities such as shopping streets, gyms, and libraries.
For example, the Suzhou Dushu Lake Sci-tech Innovation Bay Talent Community, which spans 11.6 square kilometers, has been a magnet for overseas returnees due to its strong industrial clusters, favorable policies, one-stop service platforms and various living options.
The community is also home to 31 domestic and foreign universities, nine national research institutes, more than 20 listed companies, and over 2,000 innovation companies.
Many talent posthouses have also been built near industrial parks and job centers to cater to college graduates who are seeking jobs. According to Fang Fang, Party secretary of the Suzhou Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League, 104 posthouses with 4,761 beds have been built in the city. These houses have provided free accommodation to 1,579 people to date.
This year, Suzhou is planning to add 20,000 talent apartments for people who have just started their careers and require accommodation. Talents who are renting houses can also apply for government subsidies. More than 930 million yuan ($136.44 million) in subsidies have been given out so far.
