Primary and middle schools in East China's Jiangsu province have been offering labor classes during the fall semester.
At Youfu West Street Primary School in Nanjing, students can now learn about farming at the new garden on campus. Yu Lijun from the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences recently showed students how to grow turnips at the garden.

Labor classes can have various forms, such as lectures on agricultural knowledge and visits to agricultural bases, said Yu.
The primary school has also set up classrooms where students can learn about textile, pottery, and moon cake-making.
Qu Jing, the vice-principal of the school, said 72 kinds of labor classes are currently available for students to choose. For example, a six-grade student can learn how to remove stains from clothes in September, cook noodles in October, disinfect shoe closets in November, clean kitchens in December, and make dumplings in January.
Workers from different sectors will also be invited to conduct labor classes for students, added Qu.
It is also suggested that farms and factories work with schools to provide places for students to practice skills.
