The much-anticipated "Shared Joy in Jiangsu" Chinese Speech Contest for Foreigners, which has attracted over 1,000 foreign participants looking to show off their language skills over the past eight years, will hold a special online edition this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, local media reported on June 8.

Thirty-nine standouts from 21 countries, all of whom are fluent in Chinese, will participate in three elimination heats from June 22 to 24, before moving onto the finals in July.

The annual event was sponsored by the Jiangsu Government Information Office, the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, and the Foreign Affairs Office of Jiangsu. The event is meant to give foreigners a chance to share their love for Jiangsu.

As part of the "Shared Joy in Jiangsu" series, which also includes talent shows, music festivals, and cultural trips, the Chinese speech contest for foreigners is aimed at helping the province diversify and globalize.
