An international academy of the Red Cross and Red Crescent was unveiled at Soochow University in Suzhou, Jiangsu province.

The first of its kind in China and the world, the academy has filled the blanks in terms of a higher learning institution that is dedicated to Red Cross studies in a real sense.

Soochow University has led China's studies in related areas and has always played an active role in promoting it. The school set up the first domestic institution for the Chinese Red Cross movement in 2005 – now a flagship of such studies in China – and has since then cultivated groups of scholars and professionals that are committed to the development of China's Red Cross campaign.

The new academy will focus on six research areas, concerning the Red Cross movement, the international humanitarian law, and the exchanges and cooperation between countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Training on academic and practical skills will be included, covering short, medium and long terms as well as masters and doctorate students.
