Two Sino-foreign joint schools in East China's Jiangsu province recently announced their new plans to enroll undergraduate students.

Duke Kunshan University (DKU), a school established in 2013 and located in Jiangsu's Kunshan city, which offers students an education culminating in a US degree from Duke University and a Chinese degree from DKU, is planning this year to admit 325 freshmen around the world, among which 225 will be from domestic municipalities and 18 provinces.

The process to apply for undergraduate admission at DKU is similar to that of Duke University in the US. They may apply to DKU using the Common Application and submitting two short English application essays, semi and final performance reports of every high school term, a recommendation letter from teachers or school officials, print proof of their attending extracurricular activities and academic competitions, and other supplements showing their strong points.

Li Hanguo, an official from DKU, said the school will organize a panel of experts to check and assess the online applications.

As the school attaches emphasis to interviews, candidates who get through the first round of evaluation will visit DKU in March and April for an English-only talk with interviewers.

"The qualified applicants will be announced in April, with the total number three to four times to the final recruits; they can apply for DKU when they sit the National College Entrance Examination, or gaokao, in June," Li said.

According to Li, gaokao will account for half of the students' final assessments, while their application documents, interview results, as well as their performances at the academic proficiency test, or little gaokao which they sat during the second year of high school, will take up the other half.

Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, located in the nearby city of Suzhou, has an even stricter evaluation plan than DKU, with the school taking the students' performances in various multi-city and multi-school practical tests into account.

"We want to recruit students with strength in language and cross-cultural learning; we also place high the students' learning behaviors and capabilities in self-control," said Xie Qijian, director at the school's student affairs office.
