VR brings Chinese culture to life at Jiangsu campus

Students at Nanjing Medical University (NMU), Jiangsu province can immerse themselves in a world of books every March, the school reading month!
But the youngsters found this year to be a little bit different, as the school offered a special activity on March 28, which featured virtual reality (VR) and allowed students to experience traditional Chinese culture in a whole new way.
By wearing VR glasses, students were able to traverse Chinese history and try their hands at Six Arts (liù yì in Chinese), the six practical disciplines – rites, music, archery, chariot racing, calligraphy and mathematics – which their ancestors had to master in times of old.
The activity also included a music segment, which gave students an opportunity to play the chime, an ancient musical instrument. They could also view the digital simulated chime through their VR glasses, play it with a joystick, and just relax and enjoy the historic tunes.
A student named Song Haer said it was very interesting to see traditional Chinese culture combined with modern technology.
“It was also a good way to promote our traditional culture,” he said.
Ji Min, director of the school library, agreed with Song. She said VR technology could allow students to become truly immersed in Chinese traditional culture.
