People across China observed every March 5 commemorating Lei Feng, a soldier renowned in China for his generosity and altruistic deeds.

This was the 55th “Lei Feng Day,” with people helping others and volunteering in remembrance of Chairman Mao’s call to “learn from Comrade Lei Feng.”

A group of six overseas students from Nantong University (NTU), Jiangsu province were also filled with Lei’s spirit; they wanted to do their bit and engage more in local society.

The Indian and Namibian students visited the local Wenfeng and Qixiu communities on March 3-4, where they helped residents test their blood pressure and heartbeats, and also practiced English with local primary and middle school students.

The students were actually members of NTU’s foreign voluntary service team, established in 2012, which has been dedicated to spreading an obliging spirit across the campus.

The robust carrying out of voluntary activities across NTU was attributed to the school’s increasing popularity among overseas students. There are now over 700 foreign students studying at NTU, coming from 32 countries such as the US, Japan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Botswana, South Korea, Australia and Brazil. Their studies cover undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral education in Chinese language and literature, medical science, commercial science, nursing, and computer science.
