An electric mini bus enabling unmanned transportation hit the road of Southeast University, Jiangsu province on Feb 2.
The first of its kind in China, the bus was co-developed by Southeast University and the Nanjing Yang Zi State-owned Investment Group. It aims to improve commuting efficiency among crowded campus areas.
The electric-driven bus is four meters long, two meters wide, and 2.9 meters high. It can accommodate 12 people while enjoying a full load weight of about 3,000 kilograms.
Though the bus does not have a steering wheel, the vehicle has its top and both ends embedded with sophisticated radar and navigation systems which, working along with accurate computer processing, can realize multiple functions as precise docking and automatic collision avoidance.
The bus also features a forward-backward symmetrical design with no differences between the front and rear and which can be driven from both sides. The max speed of the bus is 20 kilometers per hour and every 7-hour of charge enables a 14-hour full-electric driving.
According to Southeast University, the bus will start its pilot duty at the school’s Jiulonghu Campus from the upcoming spring semester. The entire route is 4.5 km, which, shuttling between the West Gate and North Gate, will connect various teaching buildings, research buildings, canteens and dormitories.
The school said every mini bus will have on-duty security officers, in case of any emergencies.
