University teaches technicians and artistic inheritors

The Jiangsu-based Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) has refashioned its reputation from a school producing aircraft technicians to one producing artistic cultivators and inheritors.
At a recent unveiling ceremony of NUAA’s paper-cutting center, recognized by the Ministry of Education as China’s first group of school-based cultural inheritance centers, Zhu Weiguo, deputy director-general of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, said he was glad to see NUAA pressing forward and offered his full support.
Zhu proposed that the school offer more courses on traditional Chinese culture and cooperate with more local studios and students associations to create an encouraging cultural environment for students.
He also spoke highly of the paper-cutting inheritance center, calling it “the most effective way to promote our cultural essence and inspire a new cultural trend”.
The inspiration for the new inheritance center came earlier this year during the running of an embroidery course which saw 50 NUAA students, more than one-third of them male, treated to five weeks of immersive hands-on training with Zhao Hongyu, a master of classic embroidery.
