Prestigious physicist named chair professor at Soochow University

British-born scientist Michael Kosterlitz, winner of the 2016 Nobel Prize for Physics for theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter, was awarded the position of chair professor at Soochow University in Jiangsu on May 21.

Lin Xinsheng, a renowned physicist and professor at Brown University in the US, was also given a chair professorship at Soochow University.

The two super brains will join hands on setting up the Institute for Advanced Study on the campus, with professor Kosterlitz holding the post of honorary president and professor Lin acting as the president.

Their work mainly focuses on the study of materials science, such as research on condensed matter and soft materials.

Xiong Sidong, president of Soochow University, said he looks forward to bright prospects for the institute. He hopes that under the guidance of the two professors the institute will develop and prosper not only in theoretical studies, but also in industrial applications.
