While at the local Yuqi Distillery, the students gained insights into the region’s prolonged connection with huangjiu, or yellow rice wine, from hundreds of wine sets to the time-honored brewing techniques. They also had a taste of baijiu, a stronger white spirit, which the distillery started producing in recent years and has since developed its special sesame-flavored ones.

Their final stop was the old village of Lishe, a quaint and traditional paradise standing in strong contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city nearby. By putting on dyed aprons, the students tried their hands at making traditional cakes, such as qingtuan, green glutinous rice balls stuffed with red bean or sesame paste.
