Jiangsu students bring Chinese culture to Réunion

Réunion, a picturesque island located in the Indian Ocean, received a refreshing breeze of Chinese culture from Feb 4 to 17 as a group of 17 students from Changzhou, Jiangsu province put on a Chinese New Year’s celebration series.

The performance series, aimed to promote Chinese culture all over the globe, marks the first time for students from Changzhou Art Vocational College to perform on Réunion.

The students will stage 10 Spring Festival celebrations during their visit to the island. The debut show, which took place on Feb 4, attracted some 500 officials and local residents.

An energetic folk dance, Why the Flowers So Red, opened the event, extending season’s greetings to the local residents and overseas Chinese.

A variety of performances gradually heated up the atmosphere, including the classic Sichuan Opera, Changing Faces, which won prolonged applause from the audience.

The acrobatics performance of Ballet on the Shoulder also held the audience’s gaze by perfectly infusing western acrobatics with traditional Chinese elements.

The performances depicted the distinctive culture of China, evoking memories within many local Chinese residents of their beloved homeland.
