A group of 40 college students from Taiwan set off on a cultural tour around Jiangsu province from Jan 16 to 23.
The capital city of Nanjing, a must-see destination among tourists, was the students’ first stop. They enjoyed beautiful scenery along the Yangtze River, and paid tribute to Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the forerunner of China’s anti-feudalist revolution and founding father of the Republic of China (1912-1949).
The students then visited Zhenjiang, a neighboring city of Nanjing, for a taste of China’s vinegar culture. Pure black vinegar produced by the city’s local Jiangsu Hengshun Group is popular both home and abroad.

Students were also excited to visit Xijin Ferry as it is not only a site home to more than a dozen protected cultural relics, but also the birthplace of the world’s first charitable maritime lifesaving organization.
While visiting of Suqian, the students sampled the unique New Year traditions of the northern Jiangsu city. They made colorful dumplings with local families on xiaonian, the day of Little New Year, honoring the Kitchen God who oversees each household’s moral character.
They also received insights from flourishing e-businesses at a local industrial park, where dozens of e-commerce giants are based. Several young entrepreneurs shared their start-up experiences with the students.
The trip came to an end with a farewell party staging a selection of song and dance performances.
