The Jiangsu government will spend 25.8 billion yuan ($2.9 billion) on education in 2016, according to a drafted budget report released during the recent provincial sessions.

The earmarked funding, increasing by 8.7 percent compared with 2015, will be the government's biggest public expenditure in 2016.

According to the report, the fund will be used to develop compulsory, vocational and higher education and help to subsidize students, teachers and schools in under-developed areas.

The report also noted that the government will continue to provide financial support for school renovation projects and students' employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, as well as the free training of teachers in rural areas.
