Companies that have settled in the Xinghua High-tech Zone – in Xinghua city in East China's Jiangsu province – are increasingly utilizing the roofs of their large manufacturing plants to generate solar power, in a bid to take a more eco-friendly and low-carbon road.
The zone is located in Dainan, a top stainless-steel town in China and is home to more than 3,000 enterprises, with 256 above a designated size – those with annual revenue of 20 million yuan ($2.91 million) or more.
One of them is Jiangsu Only Construction Hardware Co Ltd. To promote its low-carbon development, it has installed photovoltaic panels covering 10,000 square meters. They generated more than 1.7 million kilowatt hours of electricity last year, accounting for 85 percent of the company's total electricity consumption.

The company estimates it can save the equivalent of 530.4 metric tons of standard coal and reduce 1,700 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
To date, some 32 enterprises in the zone have installed solar panels. Last year, Jiangsu Xingda Steel Tyre Cord Co Ltd was honored as one of top enterprises engaged in green development in the province and elsewhere Jiangsu Shenyuan Group Co Ltd was honored as a national green factory.
