Taicang sees surge in tourism consumption during May Day holiday

Taicang, a city in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, experienced a surge in cultural and tourism-related spending during the past May Day holiday.

During the holiday period, the city saw a total of 317,500 passengers transported via road, railway, and waterway, a 9.3 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Additionally, the city's scenic spots and rural tourism areas welcomed 872,700 visitors, a significant 30.1 percent year-on-year growth.

A-grade scenic spots and tourist resorts at the provincial-level or above received a total of 503,800 visitors, and the occupancy rate of star-rated hotels in the city reached 70 percent, while rural homestays maintained an average occupancy rate of 90 percent.

Additionally, the city's 10 key department stores, supermarkets, and other major retail enterprises, subject to thorough monitoring, are expected to achieve 153 million yuan ($21.20 million) in total sales revenue during the period, a 6.0 percent year-on-year increase.

More and more city residents are opting for rural retreats, enjoying activities such as flower appreciation, fruit picnicking, camping, and staying at rural guesthouses. In Yongfeng village, a forest party featuring music festivals, book clubs, and sporting events attracted many locals and tourists alike.
