Binhu district in Wuxi, East China's Jiangsu province was recently designated a provincial-level health promotion district by the Jiangsu Commission of Health.
There are currently two 2A or higher-level general hospitals, seven community health centers and 40 health centers in villages within the district.
The local government departments in Binhu have implemented a number of measures to improve public health. For example, the district's health commission has rolled out physical examinations for students and elderly people aged 65 years old and above, as well as enhanced treatment of chronic diseases. The finance bureau of Binhu has increased its spending on the prevention and management of chronic diseases.
In addition, the culture, sport and tourism bureau has been encouraging people to lead a healthy lifestyle. The district's education bureau has also made sports facilities in schools accessible to the public.
Binhu has been focusing on creating a healthy living environment for its people. In 2021, the district enjoyed good air quality for 81.9 percent of the year, while the quality of all drinking water attained the required standard. The per capita area of public parks and gardens currently stands at 20.2 square meters.
The district's life sciences and healthcare industry has also been growing from strength to strength, with its annual output in 2021 valued at more than 10 billion yuan ($1.57 billion). The Wuxi (Mashan) National Life Sciences Park in Binhu is now home to more than 180 healthcare and biomedicine companies, accounting for 80 percent of Wuxi's total.
