Rare earth battery project completed in Baotou

By Lu Wei Updated: 2018-11-20

A rare earth power battery project with investments from Baotou Haoming Rare Earth New Power Technology Co has been completed recently with a ceremony held on Nov 17, reports Baotou Daily.

The project, with 200 million yuan ($28.81 million) invested, is expected to have the capacity to produce 200 million ampere-hour rare earth batteries upon its completion.

The batteries produced will be the first batch of capacitor-type rare earth nickel-hydrogen power batteries manufactured in Baotou.

Batteries are considered the "heart" of electric cars. Baotou Haoming Rare Earth New Power Technology Co uses light rare earth elements like lanthanum enriched in Baotou as the main component of nickel-hydrogen battery electrode materials. The high-performance capacitive nickel-hydrogen battery was developed using the scientific research results obtained by more than 20 experts and technicians over the past eight years.

The Rare Earth High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, was one of Baotou city’s key projects, and in 2017, the company started to develop the 200 million ampere-hour rare earth battery project in the city.

Currently the production capacity is 2,000 rare earth batteries to be used in electric buses. When the project is completed next year, it will have an annual production capacity of 10,000 sets of rare earth batteries.
