The first wave of smart recycling bins came to Huimin district in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, on April 15.

After scanning a code and indicating the materials they wish to dispose of, residents load garbage into the bins, which remotely notify workers when full.

Residents may receive Wechat points after sanitation workers remove the garbage within 72 hours. Wechat points can be used to purchase items in online and offline stores.

Sun Saifeng, deputy director of the Huimin's community management office, noted that this pilot program is the first to introduce a new method of waste management to the city.
