Wuhai City is located in the western part of Inner Mongolia autonomous region, lying on the combination area of Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi and Gansu economic zone. The city has an area of 1,754 square kilometers, and the permanent population is 0.55 million, with three districts under its administration.

Wuhai is a new industrial city. Since the late 1950s, with the opening for service of the Baotou-Lanzhou railway, Wuhai has begun to develop rapidly as an area that is rich in resources.

Wuhai is surrounded by three mountains, with a river going through it, and is known as the “Pearl of the Yellow River.” The key project Yellow River Haibowan Water Control Project succeeded in reserving water, and the “Wuhai Lake” of 118 square kilometers is taking shape. The effect of ecological civilization construction is remarkable. The green coverage rate reached 41.9 percent, the forest coverage rate reached 17.5 percent, park green area reached 19.7 square meters per capita, all contributing to the city’s honorable title of “national green model city”.

Wuhai is rich in mineral resources, while being known as “the sea of Ukraine”. There are 37 kinds of metal and nonmetallic mineral deposits, of which the proven reserves of coal are more than 3 billion tons, and high quality coking coal accounts for 60 percent of the proven reserves of the autonomous region; iron ore reserves are more than 15 million tons; coal kaolin reserves are 560 million tons; limestone proven reserves are 2.7 billion tons; and high-quality quartz sand, quartzite reserves are 5 billion tons.

The city also has rich resources of water, soil, light and heat. It is a grape production base that is comparable with the Xinjiang Turpan region, and a number of grape varieties in the city have won the national awards.

Millions of people in Wuhai are calligraphy lovers. Of them, 31 are members of the Chinese Calligraphers Association and 125 are members of Inner Mongolia Calligraphers Association. It has won titles of the “Chinese calligraphy city” and “Chinese hard-tipped pen calligraphy city”.

In 2015, the city achieved a regional GDP of 60.982 billion yuan, the public budget revenues reached 8.048 billion yuan, urban residents per capita disposable income reached 33,968 yuan, rural residents per capita disposable income 14,402 yuan, an increase of 7.5 percent, 7.1 percent, 7.9 percent, 7.3 percent respectively.
