IMNU holds mathematics seminar

A seminar on new perspectives on the history of Chinese mathematics was hosted at the Inner Mongolia Normal University Dec 28. 

The seminar was co-sponsored by the Inner Mongolia Institute of Ethic Cultural Industry, and the Institute of History of Science and Technology at IMNU.

Experts and scholars from various higher-education institutes across the country attended the event, including people from Tsinghua University, Sun Yat-sen University and Shanghai Jiaotong University. 

Xu Zelin, chairman of the Chinese Mathematical History Society, praised the contribution made by IMNU to the development of the history of Chinese mathematics in his speech. He pointed out that the university is still facing many challenges in the development of mathematics study, and the whole academic community needs to stick together and move forward.

Discussion of the first report given at the seminar was chaired by Tang Quan, deputy dean of the Institute of Advanced Studies at the History of Science at Northwest University. Other experts, including Luo Jianjin from IMNU, gave reports on the history of Chinese mathematics, focusing on the perspective of the cultural circle of Chinese characters. 

Pan Yuyuan from the Institute of the History of Natural Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, shared his views on the transformation of the meaning and usage of "present" in the implementation of Chinese proportional algorithms.
