The 7th symposium on minority languages for young scholars commenced at Inner Mongolia Normal University (IMNU) in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia autonomous region on Aug 18.

The symposium, organized by the Chinese Information Processing Society of China and IMNU, gathered experts and scholars from across the country to discuss the development of artificial intelligence, application of augmented reality and visual identity, and the processing of ethnic minority languages.

Liu Jiuwan, vice-president of IMNU, introduced the academic achievement of the university during his opening speech, adding that IMNU will seize the opportunity to develop Mongolian language processing.

Professor Li Sheng from the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) expressed his hopes that the symposium will build a platform to help young scholars focus on natural language processing so as to enhance exchanges and communications between ethnic minority groups.

China is home to 56 ethnic groups, with nearly a hundred languages. Research on these languages started from the early 1980s with the establishment of the Chinese Information Processing Society of China in 1981.

The society focuses on language processing and sets guidelines for its standardization, which is of significant importance to the development of informationization in ethnic minority areas.
