Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Research Institute at Inner Mongolia Normal University (IMNU) was founded on March 26, 2016. It is a research platform jointly established by IMNU, Institute of Ethnic Literature from CASS, Center for Ethnic and Folk Literature and Art Development from the Ministry of Culture. By making full use of academic resources in the related areas home and abroad, the institute focuses on ICH protection and research of ethnic groups in Northern China and cross-border areas. The institute is fully responsible for organizing, coordinating experts to form research teams, integrate their intelligence to apply for forward-looking and leading research projects on ICH protection research and technology integration, protect and study ICH of ethnic groups like Mongolians, Ewenkis, Daurs and Oroqens systematically. The institute also provides decision-making consultation, intelligence support, technology strategy and planning for the autonomous region and the nation. It also builds advanced think tank in the related areas.

The institute consists of an institute committee, an academic committee, an institute office, an information room, and a research office. The institute committee members include a dean, three vice-deans, a secretary-general, three deputy secretary-generals, three secretaries, and a few part-time staff. The academic committee consists of a director, a chief expert, three deputy directors, 23-25 experts from other research institutes and universities. 

With an advanced research team consisting of scholars at different ages, the institute emphasizes its research on folklore, folk literature, folk arts, folk music, folk sports competition, folk science and technology, and traditional craftsmanship.

Inner Mongolia autonomous region, a multi-nationality area with China's majority Han ethnic group and ethnic groups like Mongolians, Ewenkis, Daurs and Oroqens is rich in ICH resources. Horqin Chao'er Epic and making skills of Mongolian Bow, nominated by IMNU were included in the list of national ICH items, while the skills of making  a Mongolian wood-carving chess, nominated by IMNU was listed as provincial-level ICH item. These are only some examples of IMNU's ICH protection and research achievements, which also reflects the university's contributions to promoting ICH protection at national and provincial levels. The institute will continue to make full use of advantages that IMNU possesses in the field of ICH research to promote ICH protection and research of ethnic groups in Northern China and cross-border areas. Furthermore, the institute will strive to develop as a platform for promoting integration between different ethnic groups, and pass down the grassland culture so as to make contributions to building a culturally strong region.
