School of Computer Science

2017-10-19

Brief introduction

The School of Computer Science at Inner Mongolia Normal University was known as Computer Center in 1986 and the Department of Computer Science and Technology in 1993.

With the merger of the College of Computer and Information Engineering and the College of Internet Technology, the new School of Computer Science started cultivating talents in 1998. It was one of the first schools of computer science in Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

It is now a comprehensive school focused on cultivating high-caliber talents in the areas of computer science, engineering, education and management based on the industry's rapid development over the past 30 years.

There are six majors including computer science and technology, communication engineering, information management and systems, internet engineering, software engineering and e-commerce for undergraduate students. Cooperating with enterprises like Beijing-based Oriental Wisdom Co and Unicloud Technology Co, the school trained a group of highly needed talents in cloud computing and bid data, laying a solid foundation for setting up courses on big data.

The School of Computer Science has 43 master's students and over 2,200 full-time undergraduate students, 111 of whom are taught in Mongolian. Computer science and technology and software engineering are the two first-level disciplines for master's students, with computer course and instruction the second-level discipline for those students. Mongolian information processing is a featured course.

The school has more than 80 faculty members, including more than 70 professional teachers. There are 10 professors, 27 people with vice-senior titles, 10 doctorate holders, 19 master's supervisors and four PhD candidates among the teachers.

Teaching and research reform

A total of 22 teaching and research projects, including four at autonomous region level and 19 at college level have been completed since 2002, with 18 of those  winning a teaching achievement award.

In 2006, the school's Computer Experimental Center was rated as a teaching demonstration center. Computer science and technology and communication engineering were rated as the brand majors in Inner Mongolia. The fundamentals of programming and digital signal processing were rated as quality courses in the region, and 10 other courses were rated as quality courses.

The School of Computer Science has published 15 series of teaching materials, five of those in Mongolian.

In 2014, it joined in the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Alliance for Chinese universities. It made full use of resources on the MOOC platforms, exploring the new teaching methods in computer science and technology. In 2016, it was named as the pilot for using MOOC in computer-related majors.

Scientific research

The School of Computer Science has developed strong research in Mongolian into information processing, cloud computing, software analysis, text mining and image processing the past few years. It has undertaken more than 10 national scientific research projects, 18 scientific research projects at the autonomous region level, and 20 scientific research projects at department level, publishing more than 300 academic papers, including 60 articles in national core academic journals. It has two patents for technological inventions, one national achievement in scientific research, five provincial achievements in scientific research, and 10 university-wide achievements.

Students' practice and innovation

The School of Computer Science has held university-wide ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM/ICPC) for 10 consecutive years, and ACM/ICPC at the level of autonomous region four times. In 2015, it hosted the National College Students Innovation, Originality, and Entrepreneurship Challenge and its trail in Inner Mongolia for the first time, winning the special prize. The Robot Contest and Computer Application Contest in North China were held at the school in 2016.
