The Laoniuwan Yellow River Grand Canyon in Hohhot – capital of North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region – has been designated as a National 5A Tourist Attraction, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced on Dec 27.
That's the highest classification for tourist destinations in China and it marked Hohhot's first-ever 5A-rated site, while increasing Inner Mongolia's total 5A attractions to eight.
The Laoniuwan Yellow River Grand Canyon began its journey to this prestigious status in November 2016 as a 4A-rated site.
By July 2023, it had passed the scenic quality evaluation of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, entering the candidate list for 5A status.
Its subsequent elevation, completed in just 17 months, is being widely hailed for the "Qingshuihe Speed", showcasing efficiency and determination.

Extensive efforts made by the Inner Mongolia and Hohhot governments are said to have contributed significantly to this success.
Over 42 improvement projects were completed – including upgraded visitor centers, transportation facilities and enhanced wireless connectivity.
Tourism services were refined, with multilingual guides and immersive experiences highlighting the region's cultural heritage.
The promotion in status is expected to really boost the area's appeal and also bolster the livelihoods of locals, with over 700 residents gaining employment as a result.
In 2024, the site attracted 780,000 visitors, generating tourism revenue of 238 million yuan ($32.61 million), underscoring its role as a driver of regional prosperity.
