On Aug 25, the 2024 Chilechuan Grassland Half Marathon kicked off in Hohhot, capital city of North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, attracting thousands of marathon enthusiasts from across the country.
The Chilechuan Grassland in Hohhot's Xincheng district, known for its expansive natural beauty, was the stunning backdrop for this exciting race.
Located just outside Hohhot, the Chilechuan Grassland is one of the "16 Sights of Qingcheng" and has been revitalized through comprehensive green initiatives in recent years. Spanning nearly 30,000 mu (2,000 hectares), it has become a sought-after destination for both residents and runners from afar.
The marathon featured two main categories: a half marathon (21.1 km) and a fun run (7.5 km). To enhance the competitive spirit, a unique team competition was introduced, where groups of 10 raced for individual glory and team victory.
At 7:30 am, runners set off from the Inner Mongolia Ethnic Sports Center, racing through a course that showcased the lush Chilechuan Grassland, the majestic Daqing Mountain, and iconic landmarks such as the Chilechuan International Conference Center, Sun Square, and Moon Lake. Along the route, stations featuring traditional Mongolian horsehead fiddle performances and contemporary music added to the vibrant atmosphere.
Those who crossed the finish line received specially designed medals reflecting the grassland's spirit, and team competitors were awarded additional prizes. After the race, participants could enjoy the 2024 China Speed Horse Racing Championship or explore Hohhot's museums and local delicacies.
