Students learn to make Laba garlic in Hohhot, North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, on Jan 9, in celebration of this year's Laba Festival, which falls on Jan 10. The Laba Festival occurs on the eighth day of the 12th lunar month according to the Chinese calendar. Traditional activities to mark the festival include making Laba garlic and eating Laba congee, or eight treasure porridge, which is usually made with at least eight ingredients and is used to pray for a good harvest, happiness, and peace.
