In recent years, Hohhot in North China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region has implemented a range of measures to increase sewage treatment, water source protection and surface water remediation -- effectively improving the quality of the city’s water supply and the environment, according to local officials.

The metropolis compiled the Double Control Scheme for Groundwater Overdraft Areas and Important Water Sources in Hohhot -- and the Comprehensive Control Plan for Groundwater Overdraft Areas in Hohhot -- which established a water resources responsibility assessment system.

Officials said it established and improved policies, regulations and social supervision mechanisms. 

Great efforts have been made to protect and restore the sources of water, as well as bodies of water and important ecological functional areas.

Last year, 10 urban sewage treatment plants in the city comprehensively improved their efficiency in urban domestic sewage collection and treatment, in accordance with related discharge standards.

The wastewater treatment of industrial concerns in the city, including Inner Mongolia Fufeng Biotechnology Co and China Mengniu Dairy Co was also regulated.

Officials said that through comprehensive management, the city's centralized drinking water sources have maintained 100 percent water quality standards for 13 consecutive years.

They added that surface water assessments have reported that a good proportion of the water quality meets national and autonomous region assessment requirements.
