Yili makes headway in poverty alleviation

2019-04-02

Yili Nutrition 2020, a program aimed at offering nutrition and education to students in poor areas, was included on a list of the top 50 poverty alleviation programs on March 31.

The State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development, along with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), reviewed poverty alleviation programs from 600 companies over the past year and plans to begin unveiling the list every six months.

The list is meant to encourage more companies to assume social responsibilities.

Yili, the largest dairy producer in China, was the only food company to make the list.

In 2017, Yili launched the charity project Yili Nutrition 2020 to reduce poverty through nutrition surveys, health education, and charitable donations.

It was the only program to win recognition from the United Nations, State Council, and CASS.

By the end of last year, the program had been carried out in 25 provinces and cities throughout the country, benefiting nearly 600,000 people living in impoverished areas. The program received a total of 52 million yuan ($7.75 million) in investment.

As the first dairy member of the United Nations Global Compact, Yili has also made great efforts to promote the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

According to the company, it will spare no effort in carrying out its Nutrition 2020 program and hopes to play a leading role in the country's fight against poverty.
