Hohhot is home to 42 ethnic groups, including the dominant Mongolian ethnic group and Han Chinese, presenting a harmonious and diverse landscape of ethnic cultures.

Hohhot is a city with abundant natural scenery, and a rich historical and cultural heritage. It has developed an increasingly sophisticated tourism sector featuring industrial tours, tours of agricultural areas, winter tourism and red tourism. 

Scenic spots such as the Shenquan eco-tourism scenic spot, Chilechuan cultural tourism area, Laoniuwan geopark, Baishi eco-tour spot and the Nanhu wetland park, have become more popular in recent years.

It has a large number of museums and cultural relics, and is an important tourism hub due to being surrounded by meadows, desert, the Yellow River, Beijing and Tianjin. 

It was honored as one of China's best tourist cities in 2004.
