Two students from the HNU-ASU Joint International Tourism College of Hainan University (HAITC) took part in the Hainan provincial competition of the “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” English Public Speaking Contest held at Hainan Tropical Ocean University in Sanya on Oct 22. 

Ouyang Zhiwei from the 2020 class of park and recreation management won the special award and Qian Siyu from the 2020 class of public service and public policy won first prize.

Under the guidance of their supervisors Yang Honglian and Mason Stoddard, the two students passed three rounds of selection and got the opportunity to participate in the school competition. After several rounds of competing in the provincial competition, Ouyang was entitled to attend the national contest on behalf of Hainan province. She is also the first HAITC student who has obtained this qualification.

The “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” English speaking, writing and reading contests give full play to the role of English education in talent training, and improve college students’ interest in English learning and application. 

HAITC has attached importance to the “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” contests. Li Meizhen, vice-dean of the college, took the lead to formulate competition guidelines. Zeng Miaoqi, director of the Academic Support Center, was in charge of competition and training program organization. Staff from the Foreign Language Center participated in coaching and evaluation. With joint efforts, students from the college were entitled to attend provincial and national contests, demonstrating HAITC’s education achievements and HAITCers’ English proficiency.
