HAITC Visiting Scholars Programme

Updated: Sep 27, 2021

As a unique Sino-American partnership programme, Hainan University -Arizona State University Joint International Tourism College (HAITC) welcomes international scholars to our campus based at Hainan University (Haikou, China). Our Visiting Scholar Programme aims to establish lively exchanges with academics from all over the world. Visiting scholars are an enrichment for our college and strengthen the bonds with our international partner universities.

The Visiting Scholars Programme is designed to support researchers who would benefit from temporary institutional affiliation with HAITC and Hainan University and whose work aligns with our three majors:

Visiting Scholars become part of a HAITC community of scholars, and they participate in research activities and events of the college. Visiting scholars also give guest lectures and seminars to HAITC students, bringing various knowledge, experience, and case studies from the international academic community.

Short-Term Visiting Scholars: HAITC offers a short-term visiting scholars programme (for about a week).  These scholars are typically distinguished leaders in their fields.  Their contribution can often include giving a public lecture, hosting a faculty or student workshop or work-in-progress seminar, and holding office hours for anyone on campus who would like to spend time with them.  We would aim to host one such scholar each semester and try to rotate among majors to enrich the intellectual life for everyone in HAITC.  If you would like to suggest a short-term visiting scholar, it is easiest if you can get the school’s support, show us that there is faculty and student interest in the scholar, and help us identify potential audiences for events.

Long-Term Visiting Scholars: HAITC invites longer-term visiting scholars, whose stay can range from several months to an entire semester or academic year.  These scholars usually have their own source of funding and include faculty members on sabbatical, postdoctoral fellows, early career researchers, or faculty members from other institutions collaborating with HAITC faculty members.  HAITC can provide office space for them (if available) and assist with the housing search. We would usually ask visiting scholars to participate in the intellectual life of the campus by offering a work-in-progress talk and/or a workshop, a lecture, a seminar, etc.  We also asked them to attend events offered on campus and interact with our students and faculty members. Visiting scholars can be hosted in Haikou in person and/or online.
