1. The 19th World Congress of the International Society on Toxinology

The 19th World Congress of the International Society on Toxinology (IST) was successfully held in Haikou, Hainan province from October 24 to 31, 2017. The fully English-speaking congress incorporated the 11th Asia Pacific Conference of the International Society on Toxinology and the 13th Chinese Conference on Toxin and Medical Application.

This was the first time the IST World Congress had been held in China in 60 years. The congress presented the latest research achievements of the Chinese toxinology community without reservation to the international academic community. It attracted more than 450 researchers from 36 countries and regions, of which nearly one third are foreign friends, to share the latest research achievements in toxins, new drug research and development, toxin treatments, and others matters and to discuss hot topics such as biotoxins and drugs.

Organized by Hainan University's Key Laboratory of Tropical Biological Resources and the Ministry of Education (MOE), the congress was chaired by Professor Luo Sulan, Changjiang Distinguished Professor of Hainan University, Secretary-General of the Asia-Pacific section of the IST and Director of the Key Laboratory of the MOE. Luo was the first Chinese researcher to chair the congress since it was founded.

Co-sponsored by internationally renowned scholars who are outstanding in toxin-related achievements, the congress was the most significant and influential toxinology global assembly ever held.

2. The 1st National Symposium on Metabolic Biology

In order to present the latest achievements and progress of metabolic biology in China and promote its growth, and further the development and utilization of animal and plant resources and human health, Hainan University's Department of Crop and Soil Sciences held the 1st National Symposium on Metabolic Biology from December 4 to 7, 2018, where special academic reports were made by Academician Chen Xiaoya and Academician Zhao Guoping of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Academician Zhu Jiankang of the United States National Academy of Sciences (NAS),  Cathie Martin of the Royal Society and Academician Chen Shilin of the China Science Center of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences (IEAS).

Other attendees also included Guo Zhangcheng, CPC Secretary of the Science & Technology Department of Hainan province, Li Yuenan, Deputy Director of the Education Department of Hainan province, Luo Qingming, President of Hainan University, and more than 600 researchers and scholars from universities and research institutes all over the world.

Professor Luo Jie of the Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Forestry, Hainan University, as "Distinguished Young Scholar", chaired the organizing committee and the symposium which further enhanced the influence of the Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Forestry as well as the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences.

3. The 4th International Conference on Cloud Computing and Security (ICCCS 2018)

The 4th International Conference on Cloud Computing and Security (ICCCS 2018) was hosted by Hainan University in Haikou on June 9, 2018. ICCCS 2018 provided a forum for researchers, scholars, students, and technicians engaged in computer research and engineering at home and abroad to exchange the latest academic achievements and discuss the frontier issues.

The conference featured three thematic reports and a range of sub-reports on cloud computing and security, the Internet of Things and security, big data and security, multimedia and security, artificial intelligence and machine learning, computing materials, and other hot topics. It proved to be an exchange platform and intellectual support for the construction and development of the Hainan Free Trade Zone (Port) and key industries such as Internet and high-tech.

4. 2015 Academic Annual Meeting of Chinese Society for Plant Pathology & the 5th Sino-American Symposium on Plant Pathology

With the theme of "collaborative innovation and green health to usher in a new future for plant pathology", the meeting began with selected reports, where delegates exchanged views on the latest research and common problems in plant pathology.

Professors and researchers from 13 universities, including Guizhou University and the University of Florida, were invited to deliver special reports and group discussions on specific topics were held on July 23 and 24. Participants were from 153 universities and research institutes, including more than 20 college-level leaders, Changjiang Scholars and recipients under the Distinguished Young Scholars Fund.

The three-day meeting was sponsored by the Chinese Society for Plant Pathology, along with the College of Environment and Plant Protection of Hainan University, the Institute of Environment and Plant Protection of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS), the Institute of Plant Protection of the Hainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and the Hainan Association for Science and Technology.

5. The 210th Shuangqing Forum—Basic Research on Precision Diagnosis and Treatment of Medical Optics

The Shuangqing Forum themed with "Basic Research on Precision Diagnosis and Treatment of Medical Optics" was hosted by Hainan University in Haikou on October 24 to 25, 2018.

Focused on the frontier scientific issues around the theme, the Shuangqing Forum grasped the future trajectory of medical optics research after condensing the key scientific issues in related fields and discussing the key funding areas in the next 3 to 5 years.
