On March 18, South China's Hainan province revealed its two mascots for the first China International Consumer Products Expo, which is due to be hosted in the provincial capital Haikou in May.
The cute mascots are two Hainan gibbons - the male Yuan Yuan and the female Xiao Xiao - which are considered the world's rarest ape or primate.
Ruslan Tulenov, global media officer of the Hainan International Economic Development Bureau, said the mascots represent Hainan's local characteristics. They also allude to the expo's rarity and uniqueness, and highlight the province's "green" philosophy both in terms of taking care of the environment and hosting the expo itself.
