Shi Liping, Guizhou's deputy to the National People's Congress (NPC) and owner of a Miao embroidery company, gave an interview prior to the annual NPC session on May 22 in Beijing, in which she shared her story of helping people shake off poverty.

In recent years, Shi has strived to promote traditional Miao embroidery, and in the process has helped about 4,000 women obtain employment.

As the seventh inheritor of Miao embroidery, a national intangible cultural heritage, Shi started to record the history and collect documents about Miao embroidery in 2000, making it her mission to promote the traditional craft.

In 2008, Shi established a Miao embroidery-making team in her hometown of Songtao, Miao autonomous county. The team has since been expanded from just three makers to over 4,000, including laid-off women, left-behind women, and migrant workers returning home.

Shi has created a self-owned embroidery brand, which has been introduced to 67 countries and regions.

By establishing more than 100 workshops in the homes of relocated or impoverished residents, Shi has helped local women to master the embroidery skill, and create an output value of over 600 million yuan ($84.09 million).

In Guizhou, industries such as Miao embroidery have helped 500,000 women find jobs.
