In Pingtan village of Xiuwen county in Guiyang, Southwest China's Guizhou province, there is an experimental base that uses fill light to help improve the growth of kiwi fruit.

At the base, about 1 meter above the green kiwi fruit plants, a string of fill lights is hung to help the seedlings meet the conditions required for growth and ensure their healthy development, flowering, fruiting, quality, and yield, as well as boost incomes for growers.

The experimental base is part of an orchard belonging to Li Xingxiang, a farmer in Pingtan village. Li has 8 mu (0.53 hectare) of kiwi fruit, and through his intensive cultivation, the fruit set rate is high and its yield is around 2,750 kilograms per mu.

This year, Li's family cooperated with a technology company in Guiyang to enable the fill-light experimental base to enhance photosynthesis and improve fruit quality by extending the amount of time that light is provided.

As the core area of the kiwi fruit industry in Xiuwen, Pingtan village is home to a total of 13,000 mu of kiwi fruit. After more than 30 years of growing, it has acquired advanced technologies such as solar insecticide. The village's kiwi fruit plantations bring in an average annual revenue of about 150 million yuan ($21.8 million).
