The vegetable base in Xiaoba village, Xiaoqing town of Xiuwen county, Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, was recently bustling with farmers weeding vegetables.
The base, covering an area of about 160 mu (10.67 hectares), involves more than 400 villagers in Xiaoba village.
The area used to be a wasteland because every summer the rainwater from all sides would collect in the mountain basin, submerging the crops, so it lay abandoned for more than 10 years.
This summer, under the guidance of the Party Committee of Xiaoqing town, Xiaoba village reclaimed the abandoned land, using agricultural machinery to deep plough and level it, and then planted the first batch of 450,000 fast lettuce plants, increasing villagers' incomes.
The vegetables planted in the base are almost mature and will hit the market soon, with an expected output of around 600,000 kilograms.
During the construction of the base, Xiaoba village developed contract agriculture through the model of village collective enterprises + farmers.
The village collective economic organization Xiuwen Mengyuan Agricultural Development Co organized the production, and Guiyang Agricultural Products Logistics Development Co provided seedlings and technical services.
More than 400 villagers involved in the relevant plots can not only reap the dividends, but also work at the base to make money.
To promote rural vitalization, this year, Xiaoqing town has focused on its position as a hometown of melon and fruit, paid close attention to agricultural modernization, and developed fast-growing vegetables, tomatoes, morels, screw peppers and other characteristic and advantageous industries.
So far, the town has 14,784 mu of vegetables in soil, including 872.75 mu of high-standard greenhouse vegetables.
