The bureau of Guiyang market supervision and administration announced the local standard for Xiuwen kiwi fruit – a geographical indication product – on Aug 10. It will be officially implemented on Nov 1 this year.

Xiuwen kiwi fruit has been cultivated for more than 30 years in China.

Xiuwen county in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has planted 167,000 mu (111,33.33 hectares) of kiwi fruit, ranking third in the country, with a comprehensive output value of 2.5 billion yuan ($369.77 million) in 2021.

Based on an investigation of climatic and soil conditions, topography and more in the production area for many years, the standard specifies the terms and definitions of the geographical indication product and the scope of protection, natural environment, planting techniques, quality requirements, test methods, inspection rules and requirements for signs, labels, and packaging, transportation and storage.

It will provide scientific guidance for the standardization of Xiuwen kiwi fruit, further improve product quality and safety, enhance the brand influence, market competitiveness and added value of Xiuwen kiwi fruit, and promote the sustainable and healthy development of the kiwi fruit industry.
