The Hushan community is located in the center of the old city of Xiuwen county in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, covering an area of 1.16 square kilometers.
Divided into 54 courtyards, the community consists of dormitories for employees and self-built houses. It is among the first of such residential quarters built in the county.

Narrow and shabby, the Hushan community was once dilapidated and depressed. The residents living there were getting older, the young people were moving out to get into the outside world to find employment and the community gradually lost its youthful vitality.
But over the past year or so, Xiuwen has carried out a renovation project and it has made a world of difference.
Deng Kai, community director, said the work was wide-ranging, including road repairs, exterior wall painting, installing streetlights, building pavilions and reconnecting external network cables. Other work involved adding water and electricity meters, providing natural gas and emergency fire-fighting facilities.
"We also cooperated with planners and aesthetic designers to beautify the streetscape and created a unique landscape," Deng added.

So far, the transformation of 16 courtyards and two back streets in the community has been completed.
Currently, walking into the Hushan community, you can still see old polished iron gates and a window shop less than 10 square meters. But, the old community has undeniably acquired a new vitality.
