Xiuwen county in Guiyang – capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province – will hold its celebration for the Chinese Farmers' Festival and launch the Xiuwen kiwi fruit harvesting season on Sept 26.

That's according to a news conference held on Sept 22, which detailed the series of activities that will be staged to celebrate the festival, such as exhibitions and sales activities for the county's special agricultural products and tourism products, and Xiuwen kiwi fruit sightseeing and picking activities.

Xiuwen's kiwi fruit sector has a history of more than 30 years of development. The county's kiwi fruit planting area covers a total of 167,000 mu (11,133 hectares), ranking it third in size in China and first in Guizhou.

This year, the fruit-bearing area for kiwi fruit in Xiuwen has reached 120,000 mu and the estimated fruit output will be 70,000 metric tons, worth 2.5 billion yuan ($387 million).

At present, there are 6,901 kiwi fruit growers in the county, including 301 large growers with more than 50 mu, 169 enterprises and 130 cooperatives. As a result, the kiwi fruit sector is reportedly becoming a pillar industry in Xiuwen.
