The national "100 most beautiful ancient trees and 100 most beautiful ancient tree groups" selection and promotion campaign, guided by the Office of the National Greening Committee, recently wrapped up.
Through local recommendations, preliminary reviews, public voting, and expert evaluations, two ancient trees from Guiyang were selected as two of the 100 most beautiful ancient trees.
The first is a cypress with a history of 515 years located in Yangming village, Xiuwen county. The second is a Phoebe zhennan with a history of 600 years located in Duoyang village, Kaiyang county.
The Office of the National Greening Committee launched the selection and promotion campaign in July this year.
It selected 10 types of trees including ginkgo, pine, Chinese arborvitaecypress, weeping cypress, camphor tree, Phoebe zhennan, locust tree, banyan tree, and elm, with 10 ancient trees each, totaling 100 trees.
In addition, 100 ancient tree groups were selected without restrictions on tree species.
In recent years, Guiyang has been promoting the protection of ancient trees and other natural resources.
As of May 2023, Guiyang had a total of 4,033 ancient trees from 154 different species, distributed across various districts, county-level cities, and counties.
Among them, Wudang district has the largest number of ancient trees with 1,098, followed by Huaxi district with 909 and Kaiyang county with 734.
Among all the ancient trees in the city, 322 are first-grade ancient trees, accounting for 8 percent of the total, and 765 are second-grade ancient trees, accounting for 19 percent of the total.
