Nansha invites bids for underground space

Updated: 2020-01-06

Guangzhou’s Nansha district recently released a tender announcement for the second-stage of its underground space project in the Pearl Bay Area, which is aimed at creating an area of urban infrastructure which lies both over and underground.

The project, located at Hengli Island in the Pearl Bay Area, is planned to include a one-way subsurface ring road and underground public space, with the former measuring 6.03 kilometers and the latter covering 59,700 square km, according to the document.

There will also be four pairs of inlet and outlet ramps to connect the underground construction with the surface, and another two pairs to link it to the cross-river tunnel exits.

The project is beneficial in terms of raising the district’s rail transit coverage which will support its development. It is designed to foster a “three-dimensional service platform” that ensures the district’s operation and security.

The project, taking inspiration from the local Lingnan culture, has redefined the idea of urban space with its “underground building overhang” concept.

The construction is expected to offer more comfortable facilities to various groups of people. The underground moving walkway system aims to ease commuting pressure, and the shared parking system will improve parking efficiency.

The design also optimizes the design of access routes and increases their number, leading to a better environment above ground too.
