A delegation of 23 preschool children as well as their parents and teachers from Macao's Fu Luen School visited Guangzhou Nansha district experimental kindergarten on Dec 31 to welcome in the New Year with local children.

The two kindergartens are expected to form a sister relationship in 2020, which will be the seventh of its kind between Nansha and Macao.

Various traditional handicrafts such as Chinese ink painting, pottery and gambiered Canton gauze were showcased during the event, with the children experiencing them under the guidance of teachers.

Delicacies from both Guangzhou and Macao were also available at the event, along with interesting performances such as Cantonese children's folks and cuju, an ancient sport similar to football.

A mother from Macao surnamed Lau said that this was the children's second visit to Guangzhou but their first time to experience local customs such as Kirin dance and to eat local delicacies.

"We would like to participate in more activities like this in the future to let children broaden their horizons and make more friends as Macao and Guangdong share common cultural origins," added Lau.

Zhang Qiong, head of the Nansha district experimental kindergarten, said that the activity, themed on cultural communication, allows children from Guangzhou and Macao to learn more about Lingnan culture in an easy way and strengthens their identification with traditional culture.
