A recent announcement that construction of a cross-sea highway to connect Guangzhou’s Nansha district and Zhongshan will be started by 2020 has attracted investment of over 20 billion yuan ($2.82 billion), according to the official website of Guangzhou Communications Investment Group Co, Ltd.
The project, spread over 32.4 kilometers, will make Nansha further live up to the name of transportation hub of the Pearl River Delta and link the city clusters across the water.
The whole highway project will have supporting facilities including 50 bridges, an administration center, two maintenance areas, an inspection station and a service area.
Notably, plans for the sea-crossing highway include two bridges spanning 975 meters and 1,500 meters.
The new expressway will join with already-built ones to create a transportation network in Nansha and Zhongshan, and will open up a channel for personnel and materials distribution in the west part of the Nansha Free Trade Zone.
There is no need to fear its impact on nearby wetland scenic spots. Any harmful effect on the birds living there will be negligible, according to an environmental impact assessment.
