Dating back to the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), the Yuyan Academy is named after the Southern Song minister Zhong Yuyan, holding a rich historical heritage spanning over eight centuries. The academy embodies the core values of the Zhong clan, emphasizing virtues such as loyalty, filial piety, integrity, and frugality, showcasing a distinctive blend of Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist principles.

Circling an area of approximately 1,868 square meters, the academy includes academies, ancestral halls, temples, and gardens, nestled among scenic landscapes and enveloped by verdant mountains, providing the unique charm of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) architecture. In November 2008, the Yuyan Academy was designated as the fifth batch of cultural heritage conservation units in Guangdong province.
