The second expansion of the Yonghe Tunnel in Guangzhou's Huangpu district was launched by China Construction Seventh Engineering Bureau on June 22.
The tunnel was originally designed with two lanes and opened to traffic on Dec 23, 1997. It went through its first expansion in April 2004, when three lanes were added.
Another three lanes will be added in the second expansion, which is expected to be completed by late June 2023 following evacuation, furnishing, mechanical and electrical installation work, as well as road surface construction, according to the Guangzhou Development District Construction Management Center.
The second expansion of the Yonghe Tunnel is launched by China Construction Seventh Engineering Bureau on June 22.
The six lanes added in the first and second expansions will be used for vehicular traffic, while the original two lanes will be reserved for the Huangpu Tram Line 5.
The Yonghe Tunnel forms a significant part of Kaifang Avenue. A south-north throughfare in Huangpu, the avenue stretches 45 kilometers from Shayuzhou Tunnel to the north of the China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City, running through Yonghe Economic Zone, Guangzhou Science City's Yunpu area, Lin'gang Economic Zone and Guangzhou-Hong Kong Smart Manufacturing Cooperation Zone.
The avenue is currently being transformed for a smoother traffic flow. After the transformation is completed, drivers will be able to reach Huangpu Port from the core area of CSGKC in around 30 minutes.
