Light Hanging Festival (district-level intangible cultural heritage)

Updated : 2019-09-04

The time-honored Light Hanging Festival is a folk activity held annually on the 15th day of the first lunar month in Luogang street. It coincides with the Yuanxiao Festival, or Lantern Festival.

People hang up lights to pray for good luck and child bearing, which derives from the Lantern Festival in Guangzhou.

On that day, the elders of the clan teach their descendants in the ancestral hall, praising good behaviors and punishing bad. Hanging lanterns not only enhances the clansmen’s sense of identity and pride but also strengthens the bonds between them, which is conducive to social harmony and stability.
