Customs officers discuss trade in Guangzhou

Senior customs officers from 13 countries gathered at Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center on June 19, to share experiences of trade facilitation and brainstorming possibilities of multilateral cooperation.

The Belt and Road Customs Seminar on Trade Facilitation also attracted some 60 leaders from Asian, European and African countries, such as Iran, Estonia, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Greece, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt.

Participants held deep discussions on topics such as the construction of the New Eurasian Continental Bridge, collection and administration of customs revenue, customs risk management, technological innovation and the European Union's Authorized Economic Operator system.

They agreed on common views at the seminar and will work together to boost customs connectivity, promote pragmatic cooperation and strive to push forward trade.

Guangzhou is of great importance on the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and has been expanding collaboration with countries along the route, with the city setting up 166 operations in countries along the route 2013, said Chen Zhiying, executive vice-mayor of Guangzhou.

According to Xie Song, director of Guangzhou Customs, Guangzhou has formulated 10 major tasks in its implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative.

So far, Guangzhou has trade relations with 66 countries along the Belt and Road route, and registered an export and import trade volume totaling 1.4 trillion yuan ($204.9 billion) during the first five months, up 40.2 percent year-on-year.

Guangzhou has also initiated point-to-point customs cooperation with the Netherlands, Australia and the United Kingdom.
