On Oct 15, Guilin released the Lijiang River Ecological Environment Quality Report (2022), which summarizes the city's experience in protecting the Lijiang River and evaluates the outcomes of such efforts.
It signifies a new stage in the protection of the Lijiang River, which was selected as one of the first batch of beautiful river and lake governance cases in China.
Zhou Jiabin, Guilin's Party secretary, pointed out that the report aims to provide a basis for the scientific protection of the ecological environment of the Lijiang River and to offer guidance for the participation and supervision of the public in the protection of the river.
Chen Liang, director of the Department of Ecology and Environment of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, stated that the Lijiang River is the soul of Guilin's landscape and is now under comprehensive protection, governance, and improvement throughout its watershed. Moving forward, Guilin will further strengthen ecological environmental advantages, promote green development, and make the Lijiang River a model of comprehensive river governance in China and of environmental protection in the world.
Li Chu, mayor of Guilin, stated that the city will make full use of the digital Lijiang River 5G platform for comprehensive ecological protection and utilization. At the same time, the city plans to apply for internationally-renowned awards such as the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize and is preparing to host the World Canals Conference 2026.
